Where Do Espadrilles Come From?
The espadrille has been the go-to summer shoe in the Mediterranean for centuries. Depending on where you are, it’s called by different names: “espardeña” in Catalonia, “esparteña” in Aragon and the Levante region, “valenciana” when it has a leather insole, and “espadrille” outside of Spain. It’s the same shoe with different names.
CM Mediterránea breaks with that tradition and now manufactures them in Murcia. The same materials as always, with styles that can be worn around town—not just in August.

Materials
Natural materials—that’s what makes it possible to wear a pair of summer shoes for ten hours straight.
Esparto and Natural Jute
Jute is the plant fiber used to weave the esparto portion of the espadrille. It is durable, breathable, and biodegradable, leaving no residue. It is what gives the espadrille its classic look.
Cotton Canvas
The shoe is made of cotton canvas, a breathable, lightweight fabric. It withstands the heat well and can be dyed any color, which is why canvas espadrilles have always been a summer staple.
Leather Insoles
All of our espadrilles have natural leather insoles. The leather molds to your foot with wear, so after two weeks, the shoe is yours—not the last’s.
Types of Espadrilles
Five different styles, depending on how you dress and how much you’ll be walking.
Classic Flat Espadrilles
The classic model. Low sole, canvas upper, and no frills. It’s perfect for a trip to the market or for hanging out on a patio at 11 p.m.
Espadrilles with Wedge
Low, medium, or high wedges—whichever you’re looking for. They add height without compromising comfort, which is why esparto wedges have been popular for decades.
Espadrilles with Ribbons
The ones that tie around the ankle or go up the leg. This is the most recognizable style of espadrille, and the one that changes the most depending on how you wear it.
Flat Sandals
Open-back design for those days when it’s really hot. Lightweight and cool, with the same finish as the rest of the collection.
Platform espadrilles
A high, flat surface with no slope. You gain elevation but keep walking at the same pace—that’s what sets it apart from a wedge.
How an Espadrille Is Made
The process consists of four steps, and manual labor is still involved in several of them.
Preparation of the Esparto
The sole of the shoe is prepared; depending on the model, it features braided jute or vulcanized rubber.
2. Canvas Cutting
The canvas or leather is cut according to the patterns for each last. This determines whether the shoe fits well or is loose.
3. Handmade sewing
The upper is attached to the sole. This step determines how long the shoe will last.
4. Final Finishes
The leather template is applied, the seams are checked, and each pair is inspected one by one before it leaves the factory.
It’s a slow process compared to what most people do, and that’s the difference you notice by the second summer.

CM Mediterránea isn’t sold online. You can find it in shoe stores throughout Spain, where you can try it on, see the actual color, and get the right size on your first try.
How to Find Your Store

- If they don’t have it, they can order it directly from the factory
- Write to us and we’ll let you know which stores near you carry it
- We’re in multi-brand shoe stores, not in department stores
- The collection comes out in the spring and sells out over the summer
- Styles change every season, so the store will carry styles different from the ones in the photo
- If you’re looking for a specific color, it’s best not to wait until August

From March through September
The espadrille season lasts seven months. They arrive in stores in March and are taken off the shelves in September, so whatever you see in April is what will be available.
